A buffer store for accumulating pieces or palettes supporting the pieces is formed between two machines (10, 12) on the conveyor connecting the two machines. This conveyor is subdivided into two sections, an upstream section (18) and a downstream section (20), the drive speed of the upstream section being high (V1), low (V2) or zero. The downstream section (20) is driven at a low speed (V2) or halted. An automated system controls these speeds at a function of the level of the store indicated by detectors (C1, C2, C3) in order to accelerate the transit between the two machines (10, 12) without in so doing generating high-speed impacts between the pieces.
