Process for treating with a wax composition wood surfaces such as those of pieces of furniture, especially with a view to giving them an appearance of patina. It is characterised in that, before the surface 1 is coated 3 with a wax composition 2: - this surface 1 is heated 7 at least locally so as to dilate the pores 10 which it has and, without waiting for cooling, each small area of surface thus prepared is coated 3 with a previously liquefied wax composition 2, - the wax 2 is allowed 5 to enter the wood especially via the dilated pores 10 and then, if appropriate, after drying and/or hardening, - the excess wax is removed 8 especially by scraping, and the piece of furniture is brushed 6 to give it polish.
