Process for the manufacture of zirconia whiskers with a particle size at least equal to 1 mu m, characterised in that, with the aim of obtaining, by the hydrothermal route, zirconia whiskers with a slenderness ratio at least equal to 2, a mixture of reagents comprising a zirconium salt, other than a sulphate, water and a sulphate ion is subjected to a processing temperature of between 300 and 500 DEG C at a pressure at least equal to 40 MPa and for a period of time at least equal to 2 h, and in that the zirconia whiskers formed are separated, optionally after having quenched the reaction mixture.
