P For the production of a wall comprising a hard outer layer (6) and a tenacious, softer inner layer (7), the chemical compositions of the hard layer and softer inner layer and the heat treatment process are determined as a function of each other to obtain a hard outer layer having the optimum hardness, and the softer inner layer having optimum toughness and weldability with ferritic electrodes; the wall being brought to a temperature of between approximately 870 and 940degree C for a period of 1 minute per mm of total thickness of the wall, the wall then being suddenly cooled to room temperature, preferably in oil ; then brought to a temperature below 200degree C for at least two minutes per millimeter of the total thickness of the wall, after which, the shielding wall is allowed to cool in the air to the temperature of the piece. /P
