Supports based on silica surface-modified by covalent bond grafting of chemical groups such as alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl groups onto the hydroxyl groups present at the surface of the support, the said groups of perfectly defined structures and the said bonds being stable and chemically homogeneous, and their degree of grafting being at least 20 % higher than those of conventional products. The process making it possible to obtain such products is characterised by the sole emission of hydrogen during the reaction of grafting of the group onto the silica, in contrast to the processes of the prior art, in which byproducts which destabilise the group-support bonds are emitted. These supports can be employed in applications in analytical or preparative chromatographic, in solid/liquid extraction, in heterogeneous catalysis or in capillary electrophoresis.
