Nonionic amphiphilic compounds derived from glycerol having the formula (I): IMAGE where A is -OR, -SR, or IMAGE , R being a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radical and n represents a value equal to 2 or a mean statistical value n greater than 1 or at most equal to 6, and the intermediates in the preparation of formula (II): IMAGE where A and n have the same meaning as above. These compounds are surface-active or emulsifying agents and some of them are capable of forming vesicles.
