A unit (1) for testing Hall effect or inductive ignition modules (16) has a front panel including push buttons (6, 7, 9) respectively for selecting mode and speed of operation, and for testing permanent conduction inhibit for Hall modules; and it includes LED's (10, 11, 12, 14, 15) respectively to indicate supply and receipt of pulses to and from the module, a test result, an RPM signal from the module and input signal frequency cycling. The apparatus also includes a load module to simulate loads, and adaptor cables (17,18) to interface various types of module with the test unit (1), the simulation module comprising an ignition and spark plug as in Fig. 4 (not shown). Mains or battery power may be used (2-4). The test unit presents a signal to the ignition module which simulates "in-vehicle" operation by cycling the R.P.M. frequency continually over a pre-set range. The test unit senses and displays the peak-current conducted by the ignition module and produces a spark at the plug which is both visible and audible. IMAGE
