A waterborne stain composition for protecting wood surfaces comprising:PP(a) a resin component comprising a core- shell polymer having an alkali-insoluble polymer core and an alkali- soluble polymer shell; andPP(b) a solvent component comprising water and an organic solvent selected from a glycol and a glycol ether.
