JOINT BOX FOR REPAIRING OPTICAL SUBMARINE CABLE

PURPOSE:To sharply simplify the repairing works of an optical submarine cable, by keeping an optical cable whose length is previously set in accordance with its installed depth and loss characteristic is several times higher than that of an ordinary optical cable in a joint box. CONSTITUTION:The joint box of this invention is constituted of an old optical submarine cable 1, joint box 2 for repair, and additional optical submarine cable 3. The joint box 2 contains an optical fiber 10 from the old cable 1 and another optical fiber 11 from the additional cable 3 and the fibers 10 and 11 are connected with each other by means of a high-loss optical fiber 12 which is connected with the fibers 10 and 11 at connecting points 13 and 14, respectively. When the losses of the ordinary optical fibers are substituted by the high-loss optical fiber 12 in such a way, no excessive length of optical cable is required for the connecting works in the joint box 2 and the repairing works can be made smoothly in a short period.
