PURPOSE:To save manpower of the operation to switch filter cloth tension by providing a thickness detector which detects the presence or absence of sludge in a belt press section to an S roll section and automatically adjusting the filter cloth tension by using a detection signal. CONSTITUTION:The upper filter cloth 2 is put on a cake C taking out side from a sludge A feed side and is successively put on a feed roll 6 and an S roll group 4, a high pressure dehydrating roll mechanism 5 and a stretch roll 9. This filter cloth returns to the feed roll 6. The lower filter cloth 3 starts from a stretch roll 10, is put on the S roll group 4, the high pressure dehydrating roll mechanism 5, and the doctor roll 11 and returns to the stretch roll 10. The thickness of the sludge is detected by the thickness detector 20 provided to the S roll 4g. The pressure to be supplied to a cylinder 22 is adjusted by the thickness of the sludge, by which the stepwise adjustment of the tension on the upper filter cloth 2 and the lower filter cloth 3 and the stop of the supply of the sludge A are automatically executed and the need for the manual operation is eliminated.
