PURPOSE:To perform hydro-demetallization by using a catalyst having a property lasting demetallization activity for a long period of time in applyig hydrotreating to heavy oil containing a large amount of heavy metal components such as vanadium, nickel or the like and an asphalten component. CONSTITUTION:Oxide or sulfide of molybdenum is supported by a porous carrier containing 5wt% or less based on alumina of one kind of or two or more kinds of alumina or titania, zirconia and silica in an amount of 2.2-5.0wt% as a metal to obtain catalyst wherein a fine pore volume is 0.4-0.8mg/l and 80% or more of said volume is occupied by a fine pore with a pore size of 100-200Angstrom and heavy oil containing 100-500wt. ppm of vanadium and nickel in a sum amount and 4-20wt% of an asphalten component is brought into contact with the aforementioned catalyst at 350-450 deg.C under hydrogen pressure of 50-150kg 1b/cm2 (gauge pressure).
