PURPOSE:To determine the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, easily, by measuring the NO2- generated by the reaction of active oxygen group with a specific substrate, thereby determining the change in the active oxygen group by SOD. CONSTITUTION:A substrate composed of hydroxylamine (salt) and hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid (salt) is added together with hypoxanthine and xanthineoxidase to a specimen for the determination of superoxide dismutase activity (e.g. aqueous solution of blood plasma), and the components are reacted with each other to form NO2-. Sulfanylic acid, N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine (salt) and an acid (e.g. acetic acid) are added and reacted to the reaction system, and the absorptivity of the produced azo compound is determined by determine the generated NO2- and the superoxide dismutase in the specimen.
