PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency of an optical pumping by allowing the energy level of rare earth ions added to an optical material to be transited from the intermediate level to the basic level greatly. ;CONSTITUTION: Tm ions and Eu ions are added to a solid state optical crystal. The Tm ions are transited by a laser light from the basic level 107 to the level 108 which is a high energy level, and from the level 108 to the level 109 by the phonon emission, and then, from the level 109 to the level 110 by the light irradiation. The energy level of the Eu ions is transited by the phonon emission from the level 111 to the basic level 107 after the energy transfer occurs between the Tm ions and Eu ions. In this way, the energy transfer takes place between the Tm ions and Eu ions, and the energy level is transited from the intermediate level to the basic level in a short period of time.
