PURPOSE: To obtain a glycol ether having good smell and useful as a solvent for coating, printing ink, etc., a surfactant, a raw material for cosmetics, etc. ;CONSTITUTION: A crude glycol ether (I) and/or a glycol ether obtained by subjecting the crude glycol ether (I) to distillation, steam blowing and/or inert gas blowing is brought into contact with an inorganic basic compound and a metal hydroxide and then distillation is carried out in the presence of a basic compound and a metal hydroxide and a low boiling point substance is separated and then glycol ether (I) is distilled out and steam and/or inert gas is blown into the resultant glycol ether (I) to provide the objective glycol ether having good smell, being ≤100ppm in content of a compound having 80-180°C boiling point at 760mmHg and expressed by the formula RO(AO)_nH [R is 1-4C alkyl or phenyl; A is 2-3C alkylene; (n) is 1-5].;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
