PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a sensitized material coloring by irradiation with ultraviolet rays, having a coloring kind of dark color, excellent light resistance and stability. ;CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is alkyl; R2 and R3 are alkyl; R4 and R" are H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, etc.) such as 1,3,3-trimethylspiro[{η6-(2' H)-1'-benzopyran}-2,2'-indoline](tricarbonyl)chromium (O). The compound of formula I is obtained by converting anisaldehyde of formula II (Me is methyl) to (salicylaldehyde)chromium complex of formula III and reacting this complex with a trimethyleneindolenine derivative in a solvent (e.g. methanol) at 0-200°C. The compound has photochromic characteristics and is useful as fiber products and plastic products changing in color by radiation with various light rays, light modulating materials, optical filters, recording materials, masking materials, actinometers, materials for display, etc.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
