PURPOSE:To generate the optimum image of a road part and to enable appropriate recognition by taking only the image information of the road part required for the recognition of an obstacle. CONSTITUTION:A 2-D image pickup device 1 and an analyzation processor 2 are mounted on a vehicle. A road image picked up by the image pickup device 1 is taken in an image memory 9 via an A/D converter 8. In a storage part 11, are data prescribing an area on an image developing in the advancing direction of the vehicle at a width approximately equivalent to that of the vehicle are stored. A characteristic amount extraction part 12 extracts a characteristic amount required for the analyzation of the state of the road from the image in the area. A fuzzy controller 13 inputs the characteristic amount to perform the fuzzy inference, gives the inference result to the image pickup device via a D/A converter 14 and sets optimum image pickup conditions.
