PURPOSE: To decrease the content of N-vinylcarbazole in polyvinylcarbazole to 25 ppm or below by dissolving the polyvinylcarbazole in a solvent and treating the solution with an acid or a cation exchange resin. ;CONSTITUTION: A polyvinylcarbazole is dissolved in a suitable solvent, and the obtained solution is treated with an acid or a cation exchange resin. Next, the purified polyvinylcarbazole is separated from the solution to remove N- vinylcarbazole from the polyvinylcarbazole. A commercial grade polyvinylcarbazole generally containing 2-6 wt.% N-vinylcarbazole is heated and dissolved in a suitable solvent. The suitable solvent is exemplified by an aromatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of 90°C or above, such as toluene or xylene.
