PURPOSE: To reduce the correction time and to minimize the error probability by determing a burst error position employing a reduced trial and error technology which drastically limits the number of latent error positions that are tested. ;CONSTITUTION: The test against the subblock, which is incorrigible by an ECC, is limited by a first level. Then, the number of bytes, which are continuous and corrigible in an error burst, is limited to the number of bytes in a parity cell so that a parity cell syndrome analysis is made possible. By the analysis. the possible error burst position in a correction incorrigible subblock is identified. Then, the data are corrected at a respective burst position by a temporary trial and error and the correction is inspected by a CRC. When one trial correction and one trial correction only are verified as a success by the CRC, the burst error correction is accepted as an effective one.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
