PURPOSE: To obtain a composite for an abrasion resistant, antistatic coating film, etc., which is clear and has a high refractive index by a process in which a poly(alkylene oxide)-containing vinyl carboxylic ester polymer is mixed with a metal oxide precursor in a solvent and cast/molded on a substrate. ;CONSTITUTION: The composite, which is optically clear, has improved mechanical properties and a high refractive index, and is useful for abrasion resistant, transparent antistatic coating, etc., is obtained by a method in which after (A) a polymer containing repeating units derived from vinyl carboxylic ester having at least one organo-terminated poly(alkylene oxide) side chain with the proviso that the poly(alkylene oxide) is present in an amount greater than 35 mole % of the total of all backbone monomer units and alkylene oxide units in the polymer and (B) a metal oxide precursor are mixed in a solvent solution, the solution is cast/molded or applied on a substrate, and the obtained sample is cured by being allowed to stand overnight.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
