PURPOSE:To directly measure the level of a high temperature molten metal at real time by applying an alternating current voltage to a primary coil, and measuring the level based on the induced electromotive force generated in a secondary coil. CONSTITUTION:An induction-type level gauge 27 is constituted of a primary coil 29 to which an alternating current voltage is applied by an oscillator 31 via a conductor 32, and a secondary coil 30 which generates an induced electromotive force E through the electromagnetic coupling in the periphery thereof in accordance with the excitation of the primary coil 29 when dipped in a molten steel 2. The induced electromotive force E of the secondary coil 30 is guided to a voltmeter 33 via a conductor 34 and measured as the level of the molten steel 2 by the voltmeter 33. The dipping depth of a holder can be directly known by the induction-type level gauge 27, not by eyes or estimation, etc. Sampling for measuring the temperature of the molten steel 2 in a pot 1 which accompanies the change of the level is always performed as the sensor holder 22 is dipped in a predetermined depth. Therefore, the representative temperature and component can be secured and the safe measurement is ensured.
