PURPOSE: To improve efficiency for compressing a document and to facilitate the maintenance of a dictionary for compression. ;CONSTITUTION: An automatic constructing device 14 for dictionary for compression is equipped with a text dividing means 22 to detect the part of changing a character type in the document and to divide the document into character strings based on this detection, a candidate character string selecting means 24 to select candidates of indexes in a dictionary 16 for text compression according to a prescribed reference, and dictionary forming means 26 to form the dictionary 16 according to the selected candidate character string. The text compression device is equipped with the automatic dictionary constructing device 14, dictionary 16 constructed by the device 14, and character string converting means 18 to convert the character strings in the text into the compressed character strings while referring to the dictionary 16 to finish a compressed text 20.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
