PURPOSE: To provide a membrane support usable for separative procedure which enables a maximum permeability and a filtration rate as high as possible to be obtained. CONSTITUTION: The membrane support is formed by a mechanically solid composite carbon-carbon material having a thin thickness in the passage direction Z of a flow to be treated and has a porous structure appropriate for a membrane, containing a fibrous substrate and a porous carbon-containing matrix. To increase the permeability of the supporting body and to reduce the roughness of the outer surface of the supporting body to be brought into contact with the membrane, the fibrous substrate is a carbon fiber mat formed with carbon fiber segments which are contained and randomly oriented within a plane perpendicular to the Z axis.
