PURPOSE:To prevent using an ink ribbon for more than its life. CONSTITUTION:A receipt/journal printer 2 is mounted on a POS terminal 1. When a program part 3 outputs a printing instruction to the receipt/journal printer 2, the program part 3 executes an internal operation and writes the number of printed characters into a nonvolatile memory 4. A life recognition part 5 reads the value of the nonvolatile memory 4, compares the value of the nonvolatile memory 4 with a value which is stored in ROM 5a and which is previously stored, decides how close the value of the nonvolatile memory 4 is to the number of life characters, displays an ink ribbon exchange message to a display part 6 as the value approaches to an exchanging time and stops the printing operation of the receipt/journal printer 2 even if the printer part 3 issues a printing instruction when the value becomes over the number of the life character and gets to a limit value.
