PURPOSE:To obtain the nonlinear optical material which has high compatibility with org. high polymers and exhibits a high nonlinear optical effect by using a specific porphyrin deriv. and further, to obtain the nonlinear optical waveguide element which has excellent characteristics of optical switching characteristics and optical bistability by using such nonlinear optical material. CONSTITUTION:This nonlinear material contains the porphyrin deriv. expressed by formula I and this nonlinear optical waveguide element contains this material. In the formula, (n) independently denotes 0 to 3; (m) denotes 0 or 1 number; A- denotes anion; X respectively independently denotes a hydrogen atom, methyl group or ethyl group. R respectively independently denotes a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, cycloalkyl group or aryl group which may be substd. or two pieces of adjacent R may form an alkylene group, unsatd. ring or arom. ring. This org. nonlinear optical material exhibits a high cubic nonlinear effect and has the good solubility in org. solvents and org. high-polymer materials and, therefore, has excellent moldability.
