LIQUEFACTION OF COAL BY USING COAL IMPREGNATED WITH CATALYST

PURPOSE: To make it possible to reduce the amount of a catalyst used and to increase the yield of low-boiling fractions by using coal impregnated with a catalyst containing a metal sulfate in liquefying coal by reacting coal slurried in a hydrocarbon oil at high temperature and high pressure with hydrogen. ;CONSTITUTION: 20-50wt.% coal powder (e.g. Pacific coal which can pass a 100-mesh screen) is thrown into a 0.001-0.06mol aqueous solution of a sulfate containing metallic ions (e.g. ferrous sulfate), and the resulting mixture is agitated and thoroughly deaerated. After the coal powder is impregnated for at least one hour, it is dried with a spray dryer. The amount of the catalyst used in coal liquefaction is 0.01-10wt.% (in terms of Fe, dry ash-free base). Although it is not always necessary to add an oil (e.g. crystal-free anthracene oil) as a medium, the catalyst is added in an amount of generally 100-400wt.% based on the coal. The temperature of coal during the liquefaction is 300-900°C. Although hydrogen need not be added in the liquefaction if a fully hydrogenated oil is used as a medium, it is generally suitable to use highly pure hydrogen.
