The invention concerns a method in which a piston and the crank of a crankshaft are arranged to reach their so called dead center nonsimultaneously. The purpose of the invention is to design an internal combustion engine primarily to better account for the combustion properties of the different fuels. According to the method in Figure 1, for example, the piston can be arranged to reach its dead center several tens of degrees of crank angle before or after the top dead center of the crank position. Mechanics of the boxer type can be used as engine type in which the pistons lie opposite each other on different sides of the crankshaft. The pistons, which lie opposite each other, are connected either with a support frame 2 or a corresponding design. In the mechanism according to Figure 1 the method has been adapted so that when line A between the bearing points on the support rods 3 of crankshaft bearing 7 are set to deviate (when crank 8 is parallel to the line of motion of piston rods 6) from a line that is perpendicular to the line of motion B of piston rod 6, the so-called dead centers of the crank 8 and piston rods 6 are changed simultaneously, which fall in both outermost ends of the mechanism in motion so that they occur nonsimultaneously in a manner determined by the change in angle in line A between the bearing points of crank bearing 7.
