BLEACHING PAPER PULP BY INITIALLY TREATING WITH OXYGEN AND/OR HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AND SUBSEQUENTLY TREATING WITH A BLEACHING AGENT WITHOUT INTERVENING WASHING STEPS
A modified bleaching process with improved reduction of organo-chlorines from the bleaching effluents without high capital cost. The unbleached pulp is initially treated with oxygen and/or hydrogen peroxide and subsequently contacting the treated pulp with a chlorine and/or chlorine dioxide and/or hypochlorite without an intervening washing step. The initial oxidizing stage is carried out at pH 10 to 11 at a temperature of from 60 DEG C to 100 DEG C for a period of 3 to 60 minutes.
