A method of determining operating parameters of a program-controlled washing machine with a resiliently mounted water container (1) housing a laundry drum (2) comprises ascertaining the height position of water level in the container as a measurement value with respect to a fixed reference point in the machine on each occasion of introduction of water (29) into the container and laundry (28) into the drum. The ascertained values are stored in a computer where they can be processed to determine parameters such as mass of the dry laundry, type of laundry, water level, water quantity absorbed by the laundry and residual absorbed water quantity after spinning.
