The invention relates to a process for the treatment of paper or board to increase the impermeability to water vapour and aromas, the paper or the board being coated with a coating agent which contains one or more polymer dispersions and the additives which are usual for paper coating agents, and the coating agent containing a mixture of paraffin dispersion and an aqueous dispersion of carboxylated styrene-butadiene, characterized in that the coating agent contains about 50 parts by weight of a dispersion (mixture D) having about 45% solids content, which has about 16% paraffin (wax) and about 29% carboxylated styrene-butadiene, and about 50 parts by weight of a dispersion (E) with 50% by weight of carboxylated styrene-butadiene. In addition, the invention relates to paper or board produced by this process and to the coating agent.
