Process for obtaining L-carboxymethyl-L-cysteine from L- cysteine by electrochemical methods. The compound which is to be obtained corresponds to the structural formula IMAGE The process is performed using flat electrodes or electrodes of any other shape in a variable number in each cell, with the anode and cathode of specific materials including lead and graphite, the catholyte and the anolyte being separated by an anion or cation- selective membrane, the catholyte including an aqueous or non-aqueous solution of L-cysteine and the anolyte containing any other salt electrolyte, the catholyte also containing monochloroacetic acid or its salts and the electrolysis being performed at a temperature of between 0 and 90 degree C, at a current density of between 10 mA/cm2 and 2 A/cm2, with the possibility of previously treating the catholyte with activated carbon, at a pH between 2 and 3, leaving it to stand until total precipitation takes place, filtering it and washing it twice with water and drying it in a vacuum at 50 degree C.
