ADDITIVE FOR PROMOTING SLAG FORMATION IN STEEL REFINING LADLE

ABSTRACTIn ladle refining of steel a molten protective slagcovering is used consisting of iron blast furnace slag, orof a mixture of solid burnt lime and/or burnt dolomitic limetogether with iron blast furnace slag in an amount effectiveto serve as a flux promoting the melting of the lime anddolomitic lime. The iron blast furnace slag avoids theenvironmentally harmful emissions caused by use of fluorsparas a flux. It forms a quicker melting slag, resulting inlower power usage and shorter refining times. It forms afinal slag with good physical properties. There is consi-derable reduction of wear of the ladle and roof refractoriesand carbon pick up from the ladle refining electrodes isminimized.
