A cylinder head, more preferably a piston (10), of an internal combustion engine is provided on its compression face (18) with a substantially central bowl (16) and a plurality of discrete squish jet channels (12) circumferentially spaced about the bowl (16) leading from a squish pocket (28) to the bowl (16). Each of the channels (12) is open to the compression face (18) along its full length from an inlet end (20) connected to the squish pocket (28) to a discharge end (14) opening into the bowl (16). The channels (12) provide the main paths for fluid flow from the squish pocket(s) (28) on compression face (18) surrounding the bowl (16) into the bowl (16). The piston (10) and cylinder are so shaped that as the piston (10) approaches top dead centre position the air fuel mixture is forced from the compression face (18) into and along the channels (12) from the inlet end (20) to the discharge end (14) and are discharged as interacting jets into the bowl (16) and increase the turbulence in the air fuel mixture in the bowl (16).
