Method for decarburizing steel in a vacuum treatment chamber consisting of an upper, bell-shaped part (4), an intermediate ring (5) and a lower part (6) containing the bath of metal to be treated (2) and equipped with two plungers (7, 8) which dip into the steel ladle (9) containing the entire batch of metal to be processed (10), characterized in that oxygen is blown horizontally over the bath of metal to be processed (2) at the level of the intermediate ring (5), substantially at its centre. A chamber for vacuum treatment of the steel is also described, in which at least two horizontal blast pipes (11, 12) are incorporated in the intermediate ring (5) of the said chamber, substantially at its centre.
