Process for low temperature synthesis of nitride powders, especially aluminium nitride. The process consists in adding to a powder of the element to be nitrided or of a finally decomposable compound of said element, for example, Al, Si, B, Ti, Nb, Zr or Cr, an activating agent consisting of an activating metal such as Li, Na, Ca, Ag, or a compound of the activating metal, and achieving nitridation by heating the powder of the element to be nitrided and of the activating agent in a nitrogen atmosphere. The presence of the activating agent produces pure nitride powders, especially ALN, at relatively low temperatures, for example between 600 and 1200 °C for ALN.
