The oxidation-promoting effect of the overbased additives can be attenuated or even eliminated by incorporation into the overbased additive of a copper carboxylate originating from aliphatic carboxylic acids containing a linear or branched C7-C10 chain. These copper carboxylates can also be employed in the form of combination with a boron derivative.
