The method for laser lettering of ceramic materials, glazes, glass ceramics and glasses in any desired shape is characterised in that a 100 to 10,000 ANGSTROM thick transparent titanium dioxide layer is applied to the material to be lettered and this oxide layer is then irradiated with a pulsed laser, the radiation being directed onto the oxide layer corresponding to the form of the marking to be applied, and that laser light of a wavelength is used which is sufficiently absorbed by the oxide layer, so that discoloration of the oxide layer is produced in the irradiated areas.
