COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR SYNTHESIZING LADLE SLAGS, TREATING LADLE SLAGS, AND COATING REFRACTORY LININGS

Refining of steel outside the first steel making tank, for example in the ladle. More particularly, it is: A) a process used to synthesize a slag on the steel which (i) attenuates the harmful effects of the natural slag existing after the first steel making tank, (ii) has a specific low apparent density, due to the evolution of gases and foaming, (iii) is suitable for refining steel, and (iv) does not attack the refractory lining of the ladle; B) a method and a composition for treating any primary slag that has entered the pocket; C) a method and a composition for coating refractory coatings. The present invention relates to the in situ manufacture of a secondary pocket slag, to the treatment of pocket slag, and to the protection of refractory coatings by the addition of materials comprising in particular calcium carbide, foaming agents such as one or more calcium, magnesium and sodium carbonates, and other components used to adjust the composition of the slag. The properties of the secondary pocket slag are technically modified using an optical basicity scale.
