The invention relates to a method, which is used to prepare a polycarboxy compound forming complexes with the inulin oxidation by calcium in the presence of a low concentration of hypohalite, which can produce a polycarboxyinuline containing about 1.2 to 2.6 carboxyl groups per monosaccharide unit. The hypohalite is preferably hypobromite, which can be produced in situ by chemical or electrochemical oxidation of a catalytic amount of bromide. The polycarboxyinuline can be used as a substitute for phosphate binding agents with calcium and in detergents.
