Method and apparatus use a piezoelectric crystal processed to monitor and report corrosion in terms recognized as conforming to an industry standard. The invention relates to a method and a corrosion control system in a corrosive atmosphere, comprising and implementing the steps of exciting in the atmosphere a crystal coated with a metallic substance attackable by corrosion and having a vibration frequency known; measuring the vibration frequency changes resulting from the corrosion of the etchable material by corrosion during each of a plurality of time intervals comprising a reference interval followed by at least one measurement interval; generating a thickness signal indicative of corrosion thickness corresponding to the measured change in frequency during the measurement gap; and converting the corrosion thickness signal of the measurement interval in a reference signal representing the thickness of the accumulated corrosion during the reference interval. The invention also preferably consists of correcting the measured frequency change during each interval to account for any deviation in the temperature in the atmosphere from a temperature pre-established standards. The invention also comprises, preferably, a moisture sensor for pulse in order to transmit an alarm to the user if the relative humidity is above a preset limit, or if the relative humidity changes during an interval of over a preset limit. According to the invention, a corrosion monitor finds application in environments such as measuring rooms and industrial process control, motor control centers, electrical rooms, semiconductor clean rooms, electronic fabrication sites , commercial data centers, museums, libraries and archives storage rooms.
