The nitrification activity in a waste water stream or tank is expediently monitored by means of a waste water part-stream which is fed at a defined pH and specified residence time through a flow cell formed as a bioreactor which has a population of nitrifying microorganisms or receives them together with the waste water. The amount of pH correction medium is measured which is necessary to compensate the pH change associated with the nitrification. In addition, the turbidity in the flow cell can be measured. Depending on the objective, using an NH4+ standard solution, the nitrification activity to be determined of a bacterial population to be evaluated can be determined or the ammonium load can be determined by means of a population of known activity, or else adaptation factors can be determined which are required for existing waste water loading and sewage sludge activities. The process can be used, in particular, for the regulation of feed to a nitrification reactor. The flow cells formed as miniaturised bioreactors can be offered in a standardised form having immobilised biomass, measuring probes and metering feed for test solution and pH-controlled pH correction medium feed having an electronic analysis and control unit.
