New lines erythroblastoid murine cells expressing src gene are strictly dependent erythropoietin to survive and proliferate. This property makes these cell lines, including the line E 31 cells ECACC No.. 900 322 11, useful in determining testing the biological activity of natural or recombinant erythropoietin. For this purpose, cell proliferation is measured on the basis of an appropriate cell function and the concentration of biologically active erythropoietin is deduced.
