The invention relates to a drive arrangement and a method for engaging and disengaging the four-wheel drive of a tractor. In this arrangement power direction switches (7), of which at least one is combined with a shifting clutch, are arranged in the drive train both to the rear wheels and to the front wheels in order to prevent distortions in the drive train. In the event of distorting moments being detected, that is a negative moment having the effect of a negative power direction to one of the drive axles (2, 4) setting in, the drive to this axle (2, 4) is interrupted, thereby switching over to two-wheel drive. In the event of a need for traction, the disconnected axle is reconnected.
