Filter tunable liquid crystal etalon comprising two dielectric mirror stack (18, 20) that define an optical cavity. Said cavity is filled with liquid crystal (26). Electrodes (14, 16) disposed on the outer portions of mirrors apply an electric field to the liquid crystal, which changes in refractive index and hence their focal length. The optical bandwidth of the filter can thus be modified electrically in a robust structure, compact, low power and inexpensive.
