This modulator comprises an active component (10) consisting of an active thin layer (14) of a photochromic organic oligomer with excitation by an optical route of reversible transient states, exhibiting a photoinduced light absorption spectrum with a narrow peak and means for addressing a light beam for writing (32) on the active component to excite the said transient states and therefore to induce the said spectrum.
