In a method for controlling a digital pulse-step modulator PSM which comprises a plurality of n identical switching stages (S1, ..., Sn) with a fixed output voltage, in which the switching stages (S1, ..., Sn) can be optionally connected in series by means of a switch (S), existing in each switching stage, as determined by an audio-frequency input signal (AF), in which method an additional periodic pulse-duration-modulated PDM voltage is generated and used for better approximation to the input signal voltage, the switching processes in the switching stages are made more uniform by dynamically changing the PDM frequency of the periodic PDM voltage as determined by the variation of the input signal voltage with time.
