New onium borates of an element of Groups 15 to 17 of the Periodic Classification [Chem.& Eng. News, vol 63, No. 5, 26 of 4 February 1985] or new borates of an organometallic complex of an element of Groups 4 to 10 of the Periodic Classification (same reference), the anionic borate entity of which has the formula [BXaRb] in which formula: - a and b are integers ranging from 0 to 4 with a + b = 4 - the symbols X represent . a halogen (chlorine, fluorine) atom with a = 0 to 3 . an OH functional group with a = 0 to 2 - the symbols R are identical or different and represent . an aryl radical substituted by at least one electron-withdrawing group or by at least two halogen atoms, when the cationic entity is an onium . an aryl radical substituted by at least one halogen atom or one electron-withdrawing group, when the cationic entity is an organometallic complex. They can be used as cationic polymerization initiators.
