A selective call receiver comprises a combination message received/message reminder alert (106). When the central processing unit (108) detects that a message is received, the alert (106) is activated until the user activates a read/reset switch (111). The message reminder alert is controlled by a reminder switch (113) and operates independently of the receipt of subsequent messages. The message reminder alert has period and duration of alert (106) activation distinct from the message received alert.
