A liquid crystal cell containing a cholesteric liquid crystal 3 between the parallel plates 1 and 2 is used, for example, in an optical filter. Preventable interference due to erroneous opposite reflections can be controlled by mixing the cholesteric liquid crystals with nematic or smectic liquid crystals having negative dielectric anisotropy and by applying an electric field in the cell at right angles to the plate.
