The profile grinding machine has a grinding disc (4) displaced relative to a workpiece (7) to obtain the required workpiece contour, with the point of contact between the edge of the grinding disc (4) and the workpiece examined via a television camera (21) for providing an enlarged image on a monitor screen (24). An image of the required workpiece contour held in a digital memory is superimposed on the camera image, for verification of the actual contour. The image of the required contour is updated in dependence on the detected relative movement between the workpiece (7) and the grinding disc (4) and displayed on the screen with the same enlargement as the camera image. ADVANTAGE - Allows direct visual monitoring of obtained profile.
