The machine has a vertical circular saw blade (3) and driven wheels (6) for the machine chassis which are driven by a hydraulic pump (10), selectively driven by an i.c. engine (12), or an asynchronous electric motor (14). A flywheel coupling (20) couples the i.c. engine to the hydraulic pump, only when it attains a given revs, the rotor shaft of the electric motor permanently coupled to the pump, with automatic disengagement of the flywheel coupling when the electric motor is used to operate the hydraulic pump. ADVANTAGE - Allows saw blade to be driven electrically or by IC engine when no electrical supply is available.
